Ya hemos hablado del ají, del choclo, de la palta y de la cancha. Ahora hablaremos de la papa.
Papa: pe, a, pe, a. También es una palabra llana, de dos sílabas: «pa» y «pa».
Significado: Esta palabra proviene del quechua papa. La papa es el alimento más básico y popular del mundo entero, su nombre científico es Solanum tuberosum. La papa es un tubérculo, es decir, es parte de un tallo o de una raíz y almacena las sustancias de reserva de la planta que lleva su mismo nombre. La papa tiene una forma redondeada y es, generalmente, de color pardo por fuera y blanco o amarillento por dentro.
En otros países hispanohablantes, especialmente en España, se le conoce como patata.
Ahora vamos por el contexto. ¿Cuándo se usa la palabra papa?
Además de ser usada en situaciones que involucren vocabulario de comida y en menús de restaurantes, la expresión popular «cuando las papas queman» significa ‘en un momento difícil’, y una «papa caliente» es un ‘problema grave o difícil de resolver’.
Y ahora… ejemplos:
- ¿Qué pasa con este gobierno que cuando las papas queman opta por el silencio?
- Antes de renunciar, el jefe dejó la papa caliente en manos de sus subordinados.
- El cocinero pela papas en la cocina.
- Veré la película comiendo cancha, papas fritas y una hamburguesa.
- En el menú de hoy tenemos pescado frito con puré de papas, papa rellena y papa a la huancaína.

Los primeros vestigios de papa poseen más de 8000 años de antigüedad y fueron encontrados cerca al pueblo de Chilca, al sur de Lima, en 1976.
Perú es el país con mayor diversidad de papas en el mundo, cuenta con 8 especies nativas domesticadas y 2301 de las más de 4000 variedades que existen en Latinoamérica.
Las variedades más conocidas son la Canchán, Tomasa, Yungay, Andina, Amarilla, Serranita, Peruanita, y Huayro.

Papa: pe, a, pe, a. A word stressed on the penultimate syllable, with two syllables: “pa” and “pa”.
Meaning: This word comes from the Quechua word papa and it means potato. Papa is the most basic and popular food in the world, its scientific name is Solanum tuberosum. Papa is a tuber, that is to say, it’s part of a stem or root, and stores the reserve substances of its plant, which has the same name (papa, ‘potato plant’).
In other Spanish-speaking countries, especially in Spain, it’s known as patata.
And canchita is known as palomita de maíz, rosetas de maíz, pochoclo, pipoca or simply palomitas.
Now let’s talk about the context. When is the word papa used?
Besides being used in situations involving food vocabulary and on restaurant menus, the popular expression “cuando las papas queman“ means ‘in a difficult situation, and a “papa caliente“ is a ‘serious or difficult problem to solve’ or a ‘hot potato’.
And now… examples:
- What is it with this government that when we’re in a difficult situation, it opts for silence?
- Before resigning, the boss left the hot potato in the hands of his subordinates.
- The cook peels potatoes in the kitchen.
- I’ll watch the film eating popcorn, French fries and a hamburger.
